Comparison and Application of Tektronix High Voltage Differential Probes  P5200A, P5205A, P5202A, P5210A Series

In the field of electronic measurement, high voltage differential probes are an essential tool that helps engineers accurately measure the voltage difference between two non-ground test points. As a well-known enterprise in the industry, Tektronix has launched various models of high voltage differential probes, among which the P5200A, P5205A, P5202A and P5210A series have attracted much attention. These probes differ in performance parameters, features, compatibility with oscilloscopes, and application scenarios. This article provides a detailed comparison and analysis of these several series of probes, and introduces practical cases of them in different application scenarios, so that readers can better understand the characteristics of these probes and make a suitable choice according to their own needs.

1. Performance Parameter Comparison

The following mainly introduces and compares the models of P5200A, P5205A, P5202A, P5210A series

2. Oscilloscope Compatibility

P5200A

It adopts BNC interface and can be used with various oscilloscopes, but requires the oscilloscope to be grounded, and cannot be used for oscilloscopes with floating inputs (isolated inputs).

For DPO/DSA/MSO70000 series, a TCA - 1MEG adapter is required; some oscilloscopes such as DPO7000C, MDO3000, etc. require manual settings or specific adapters.

P5205A

Equipped with TekProbe® interface.

Similar to P5202A, for DPO/DSA/MSO70000 series, a TCA - 1MEG adapter is required; for DPO7000C, MDO3000, etc., a TPA - BNC adapter and a TekVPI® external power supply (119 - 8726 - xx) are required, but it is fully compatible with TDS3000 and TDS5000, which is different from P5200A.

P5202A

Equipped with TekProbe® interface.

Its compatibility is similar to that of P5205A, but note that there are differences between it and P5200A in terms of interface and some oscilloscope compatibility conditions.

P5210A

Equipped with TekProbe® interface.

For DPO/DSA/MSO70000 series, a TCA - 1MEG adapter is required; for DPO7000C, MDO3000 and other models, a TPA - BNC adapter and TekVPI® external power supply (119 - 8726 - xx) are required. It is fully compatible with TDS3000 and TDS5000, which is the same as P5205A and P5202A.

3. Feature Description and Application Cases

P5200A

Features: It can be used with any oscilloscope (provided that the grounding requirements are met), and can convert floating signals into low-voltage ground-referenced signals for safe and easy display on any ground-referenced oscilloscope. It is affordably priced, making it an economical choice.

Application Case: In some small electronic laboratories, when testing ordinary switching power supplies, P5200A can meet the basic requirements for voltage measurement. For example, when testing a switching power supply with an output voltage of 220V, engineers need to check whether the output voltage difference is within a reasonable range. P5200A can accurately measure the voltage difference and help engineers determine whether the power supply is working properly.

P5205A

Features: As an active differential probe, it can safely measure differential voltages up to ±1300V, and is very effective in measurements of IGBT circuits (such as motor drives and power converters). With a bandwidth of 100MHz, it has certain advantages over P5200A in high-frequency signal measurement and boasts a high cost-performance ratio.

Application Case: During the R&D process of motor drive systems, engineers need to accurately measure the voltage signals of IGBT modules in motor drives. For example, in the motor drive system of an electric vehicle, the working voltage of the IGBT module is high and the signal changes frequently. P5205A can accurately capture these rapidly changing voltage signals, providing reliable data support for the optimization of motor drive systems.

P5202A

Features: Designed for medium-voltage applications with differential requirements up to ±640V, it features a lower attenuation range and delivers better signal-to-noise ratio. It also has a bandwidth of 100MHz, making it a good choice for some medium-voltage measurement scenarios with high requirements on signal quality.

Application Case: In some high-precision internal medium-voltage circuit tests of electronic equipment, such as the power supply circuit of some professional audio equipment, P5202A can better restore the real characteristics of signals. For example, when testing the power supply circuit of a professional audio power amplifier whose working voltage is in the medium-voltage range, P5202A can accurately measure the voltage difference while ensuring signal quality, helping engineers detect potential problems in the circuit.

P5210A

Features: It features a large differential dynamic range, enabling safe voltage measurement up to ±5600V. Despite its 50MHz bandwidth, it delivers outstanding performance in high-voltage measurement, making it suitable for professional applications that require high-voltage measurement and demand high probe performance.

Application Case: In high-voltage equipment testing of power systems, such as high-voltage transformer testing in substations, the P5210A can withstand extremely high voltage and measure voltage difference accurately. When testing a 110kV high-voltage transformer, the P5210A can accurately measure the voltage difference between the transformer's input and output while ensuring safety, providing important data basis for the maintenance and repair of power equipment.

4. Summary and Recommendations

Each of these probes has its own features and advantages. Users need to comprehensively consider the following factors when selecting:

Measurement Voltage Range: If the measured voltage range is within ±1300V and the accuracy requirement is not particularly high, the P5200A can meet basic needs; if you need to measure higher voltage in IGBT circuits, around ±1300V and require good high-frequency performance, the upgraded version of P5200A, the P5205A, is more suitable; for medium-voltage applications with differential voltage requirement up to ±6400V and high demand for signal quality, the P5202A is a good choice; if you need to measure extremely high voltage, such as above ±5600V, the P5210A is the first choice.

Bandwidth Requirement: If the bandwidth requirement is not high, the 50MHz P5200A and P5210A can meet the demand; if higher bandwidth such as 100MHz is required, the P5205A and P5202A are more suitable.

Oscilloscope Interface Type: If your oscilloscope uses a BNC interface and meets the grounding requirements, the P5200A is the only option; if the oscilloscope is equipped with a TekProbe® interface, the P5202A and P5205A are more suitable; if you are not sure about the interface type but need high-voltage measurement, the P5210A can also be used when other conditions are met.

Budget: If your budget is limited, the P5200A is a cost-effective choice; if you have sufficient budget and high performance requirements, the P5210A is more suitable for professional applications; the P5205A and P5202A are in the middle price range with high cost-performance, and you can choose between them according to your specific needs.
